"Fever: The Best Of Little Willie John"

    FEVER

Which version of "Fever" is your favorite? Little Willie John? Peggy Lee? Elvis Presley? Madonna?

William Edward John, aka Little Willie John started it all in 1956. Although "Fever" would be his most best and remembered hit, yet there were a few other tunes that some would recognize. Rhino Records' "Fever: The Best Of Little Willie John" captures 20 great R&B/Jazz/Rock & Roll tunes, covering the years of 1955-1962.

The highlights (that stood out for me) were "Fever," and "All Around The World." Another song that stood out was "Need Your Love So Bad." This song didn't stand out for me being Little Willie John's version; it was actually the Allman Brothers version from their Enlightened Rogues album. On that note, "Talk To Me, Talk To Me" was remembered by Country legend Mickey Gilley (titled "Talk To Me"; which became a #1 Country song for Gilley).

This Best Of Collection truly defines music in the genre of Rhythm & Blues. Good R&B tracks found here are: "Home At Last," "Suffering With The Blues," "Person To Person," "Let Them Talk," "Big Blue Diamonds." "You Hurt Me" has a more Blues feel.

But if its basic 1950s Rock n Roll you're looking for, there are quite a few great rockin numbers here too: "Let's Rock While The Rockin's Good" (great title!) and "Heartbreak (It's Hurtin' Me)" have the Jackie wilson R&B/Rock & Roll sound. The Beatles' did this one, "Leave My Kitten Alone." Other good ol rock n roll'ers are "Sleep," "I Like To See My Baby" (with Hank Ballard), "Take My Love (I Want To Give It All To You)" and "My Baby's In Love With Another Guy." R&B and a cool, jazzy style has the remaining songs: "My Nerves," "Spasms," "I'm Shakin'."

A great introduction to Little Willie John, Fever: The Best Of Little Willie John has the hit everyone remembers him by, and more. Despite a short temper, his abuse with alcohol, and a criminal record shadowed his life, his music defines a great source in early Rhythm & Blues. Little Willie John passed away of a heart attack in prison, in 1968. He was 30 years old.
